A Modern Oliver Cromwell.

If Oliver Cromwell was reincarnated today and held the same principles and politcal/religious views but in a contempory setting

1) What political party would he vote for?

2) What religion would he follow?

3) Would he be frustrated with modern society?

I know it's a silly question, but I was asked this at school and really have no answers!!!!

He would head the CNP the cromwell national party

He would restore the Cof E to what it should be

if he was about society would be very very different.it would not have been like it is in Britain.

3. He would probably want Charles as head of state. Ooops! I mean Charles's head on a stake!

Being a dictator he would probably set up his own system of government and leadership, probably the Peoples Front of Puritanism, or maybe the Puritan Peoples Front. And there would probably be a lot more bonfires with people on them. Irish Catholics would probably recommence terrorism in England and the royal family would be tail-whipping back to Germany.

To many British he was seen as a saviour against a tyrannous monarchy and a liberator of men, but to Irish Catholics of the time he was not too dissimilar a figure as Hitler was to the modern Jews or Saddam to the Shi-ites.

Don't think he'd be an atheist. He himself had been converted to a Puritan protestantism when still a young man and got more radical as he got older.

He'd have his own political party.

He'd be puzzled by modern society, that's certain ! He'd have thought us immoral and sinful.He'd be gratified that the monarchy had no power and that Parliament was powerful. For some reason he is seen as a great parliamentarian but in reality his parliamentarianism was a necessary part of his rejection of King Charles' belief in the divine right of kings to rule without question.Once in power Cromwell did not seem to be particularly parliament minded . If Charles had not been such an idiot (easy to say with the benefit of hindsight !) there was a fair chance that Charles could have lived a low key life, without civil wars and quietly accepted a back seat, because Cromwell was pragmatic.In fact, had Charles been more realistic ,Cromwell himself might never have become what he did, but just an important member of parliament.

Oliver Cromwell Live 100 years before the start of the enlightenment and those philosophical ideas affect our ideas and values so much today that it's a huge divide between us and those who lived before.

Cromwell's Britain probably had more in common with the Taliban than anything else and he'd almost certainly view us the same way as they do.

Of course Charles was an autocratic dictator long before Cromwell was, the difference was that Cromwell at least tried to run the country through Parliament.

The problem was that the ideas were not yet developed enough, sure there were diggers and levelers but they were seen as minority nut cases a bit like the Socialist Workers Party is today.

But Cromwell did one thing for us - he limited the power of the monarchy - no king or queen would ever take on the people again - he actually guaranteed the monarchy - without him I have no doubt that an autocratic king would have tried and we'd have had a later revolution like the French that would have lasted.

And as an aside, strangely for a religious zealot he allowed Jews to return to England. They had been banned in 1290.

So yes he'd be angry with our morals, he'd probably be closest to a modern Tory - he came from the landed classes (although ironically tories came about through a bias towards the Catholic James II). And he'd still be a puritan

probably ukip as he would not have approved of the eu, he would have been a stauch supporter of sectarianism in northern ireland, Ian paisley would have been his best friend, and he would have been protestant, there also would have been a good chance of him supporting the bnp
