my grandson says Boodicka
Question Author
I think it was boo dick a when I was at school as well dotty (but it was new which annoyed the teachers) What did they say in your fine day?
I say Bodaseea. Thats how I was taught about her at school.
It's Boo dick a, so you're wrong
How do you know whether you are right or wrong Lucy.

The question did have both pronunciations in it so there is evidence that both were used.
we said Bo dee cia back in my day (well i learnt about her in about 1964 lol)
Well my mother says the same as you Dot, and she's well up on history, I tell you. personally, it doesn't matter to me, but Bo-dee-see-a it is.
Because if there are two alternatives then MY way is the correct one. It's easier all round if people accept this.
I'm strangely beginning to have some affection for you Lucy "I could suck up a chair through my @rse" Thomas.
ooo licy you are a bit arrogant aren;t you? that's not an endearing quality
Yes, they all come around in the end. I think it's my natural charm.
I couldn't give a 5hit whether I'm endearing or not. I tell it like it is.
Pardon me, Dot? Arrogant for saying what? My mother pronounded the name as I've said - so bearing in mind that's the way I was taught it - that's the way I say it as well.
Was "licy" to me - or to Lucy???? Oh forget it - I think Lucy's just trying to make herself known on here, through having a certain command of the English language. No need to shout about it Luce - shall we just agree with you, and stop going on about who has the most intelligence?
It comes down to pronunciation, and the current fashion is to pronounce it boo-dicca (Boudicca), rather than the traditional bow-di-see-ah (Boadicea). None of us could really know how the Iceni pronounced it, but what we do know is that the name comes from the ancient Celtic or Old Welsh word bouda for victory.

The historian Tacitus gives us the only contemporary spelling of her name, "Boadicca". In fact, the Romans called her Boudicca and Boadicea Victoria. So neither is incorrect.
I was of the Bo-da-see-a schooling.

Boo-dick-a sounds like something Avid Merrion would say.
what about Bo a dee see ya
i think i will call her that from now on
pronounced /bɒʊˈdiːka:/, although it is mispronounced by many as /ˈbuːdɪkə/

Unfortunately I can't remember any of my phonetic studies, but I think that means the first syllable rhymes with 'how'. Anyone able to set me right?

But of course Ocatvius is right, nobody knows how the Iceni spoke or wrote; all we've got to go on is how the Romans thought it was, and they may well have got it wrong, just as we do when we try to pronounce Russian or Arabic words, even when we've agreed on a spelling.
