well i know that it must have been pretty cold, and that maybe there was not alot to do in those long winter evenings, cos i was born in october 55 and i was a week or so overdue my Mum reckoned!
In Sussex where I lived there were heavy falls of snow on both the 4th and the 13th, but on both occasions it thawed the next day or the day after.

Rest of January was changeable. The main cold period of that winter was in the second half of February when there were severe blizzards in Scotland.

There was further snow in second week of March.

1954-55 was one of the severest of the 20th C. in northern Scotland but only a little snowier than average elsewhere.
