Hypnosis why does it work for certain addictions

Thinking why is it that can help people who smoke and it helps give that addiction up, and yet cant help people with drugs and drink addiction! surely they all belong to the addiction part of the brain!

Hypnosis probably does help a bit for drink/drug problems but there are usually far reaching social and psychological issues associated with these problems and addressing these is necessary to make any progress.
