I thought it was to do with someone (Wilkes-Booth) not liking his ideas on the emancipation of slaves. This was during the American Civil War of course.

I think there was still fighting going on in the civil war, though General Lee had surrendered, and the assassins figured killing all the leading Northern politicians (Lincoln wasn't the only target) would help their cause.
