You could start here http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/familyhistory/
I found that the best way to start was to ask older relatives for any details they could give me, when their parents were born, where, any aunts, uncles, could they remember their grandparents etc. Then work backwards, starting with your parents or granparents. Birth certificates give the mothers maiden name, marriage certificates give the fathers name of both the bride and groom. The census on line is great, once you have found your family on their you can usually track them back through the years. Good luck.
Oh - one other thing, under the history category there is a genealogy section, you may get more positive responses on there.
I joined www.Genesreunited.co.uk it costs about 15 per year, for that you can build your tree on line, [keep a written record as well] , go on the Community board where there is a tips page, on here you can ask questions when you are stuck and some incredibly clever people will help you.
you can also find lists of sites that will help you search.

You can also get in touch with other people having the same names in their trees
firstly it isn't easy doing too many lines at once and so start with a line that you can trace locally, using graveyards and local register offices, assuming your family have been in one place for a while!!! lol
