http://www.hberlioz.com/France/Strasbourg.htm# 1863 This excellent site has reproductions of old postcards . Can anyone please confirm that the road bridge shown is that which has often been seen in WWII film over which the Germans crossed in 1939 when they (re-) occupied the Rhineland? The film showed marching soldiers including many horse-led vehicles. The text says that the French blew up the rali bridge in 1940. Presumably as the Germans were not supposed to have had troops in the Rhineland, it was occupied by the French as part of the settlement following WWI and the Treaty of Versailles? If memory serves, after WWII the Saar voted (by plebiscite?) to join Germany. Apparently Strasbourg did not. Why?
