'Eavesdrop' in this sense is a form of the ancient concept of 'eavesdrip'. This refers to the area of ground onto which rain would drip from the thatch or slates of old houses. The idea was that someone building a house next door could not do so closer than two feet away in case the drip - or eavesdrop - from his house damaged the other property-owner's land. Sadly, it doesn't give you "listening-in" rights on your neighbours!
