they probably only sense ghost cats, which is not much use unless you are plagued by ghost mice.

No, cats are clever enough to know that ghosts (any variety) don't exist.

Here's looking at you, garfunkeland...

Feeling spooked yet?

I had a cat that would fix her gaze at nothing at all, and at one instance even growl like a dog..! She only did that once in seventeen years, but I will never forget it. Not even despite the fact that after thirty seconds or so I too heard the sound that she had obviously just heard, and not even despite the fact that the sound in question was caused by a perfectly natural (as opposed to supernatural) neighbour - but the sound my cat made was UNNATURAL! Creeps me out even now to think of it.

They can see ghosts. And have you ever noticed that they don't look at their reflection in the mirror? Same with dogs. Freaky!
Champagne, my cats spend ages fascinated by their reflections in my wardrobe mirror. Then they run around the sides looking for a way to get in! but yes, I thought cats and dogs were open to the 'spirits'!
Champagne and mata hari, I've seen both types of behaviour. Some cats do do everything they can to avoid meeting their own stare in a mirror, and some do do everything they can to get in behind the mirror. When I grew up my mother used to explain to me (we had to Siamese cats) that they probably believed the image they saw represented another cat altogether, and they were looking behind the mirror to find the coward that was clearly hiding there. A more timid sort of cat might instead look away, to send a signal of submission to 'the cat behind the mirror.' My own (beloved and missed) cat, who lived to be seventeen, spent her life avoiding to look into the mirror when I held her on my shoulder. Then, on the very last journey to the vet, I was walking around with her on my shoulder, in that little room, waiting for the vet and the needle. I stood a while in front of the mirror trying to collect myself by meeting my own eyes, when suddenly, to my disbelief, my cat turned around on my shoulder to look at herself in the mirror, too...! Once in seventeen years, minutes before she was put down... Isn't that weird.

(Could somebody please explain to me why it's sooo much easier to proofread your own text once it's already out there... I meant to say We had two Siamese cats. Sorry.)

Do cats exist ?

or are they a figment of the imagination ?

the have the ability to sense goats.
DaSwede it seems to me that your siamese cat was taking a good look at herself before the Grim Reaper stepped in, so as she could remember how she looked in the physical sense - because, as I'm sure you know, when we (and our beloved pets) pass on, we do not have a body as such, and she knew this.
From what I have studied on psychic phenomena cat's are just like us. Some see spirit's and some don't. It is far more common for animals to have a sixth sence because they need it in the wild. The theory is all human's used to have a sixth sence in the cave man days but it is dormant now because the modern world supresses it.
