Why is 26 December known as boxing day. Does it have anything to do with sport or the giving of presents in boxes?

It's something to do with the bonus given to employees at christmas in the olden days - read a bit of Charles Dickens that should answer it............

but TCL is most plausible. People are sometimes surprised to find that other countries (eg the USA) don't know what it is.
