I noticed on my 2 cats favourite blankets the others day that it was covered in tiny black and white bits. White one all usually of one shape and the black stuff was all crumbly. I washed it immediatly fearing fleas though both cats are house cats and still very young. Are they fleas? If so what is my best coarse of actions before I get majorly infested with the things?

If it belongs to the cats it is THEIR blanket.

My cats and THEIR blanket

hmm, very helpful helpfulguy....erm...maybe not!
The way to tell if it is flea dirt is to get a piece of white kitchen roll make it damp and then put some of the little crumbly black bits on it...if after a few minutes you have a dark reddish circle on the tissue then it is likely to be flea dirt. As they drink the blood of your kitties and so their faecal matter will also be bloody. As for the little white things...they could be ticks I guess try and see if they have minute little legs at one end of their body.
If it is fleas then head sown to your vets sharpish and pick up dome frontline for cats, its brilliant, it kills fleas, ticks, ear mites and I believe now it is killing the flea eggs and larvae too, so your house should be fine.
btw...just had to add to vehelpfulguy that I missed at what point itsallyellow misused the word "their" or "there" ? Maybe its just me but I am not seeing what you are being sooooooo anal about!!!! There is nothing wrong with talking about my cats favourite blanket !!! It makes perfect sense itsa, ignore Anal Al there! : )
Ah ok ok ok..now I see it!! In the title!!

Apologies helpful! Still that is pretty snotty!!
lol O-G !!!!!
If the white things looked kinda like plain rice, then it could me a worm infestation. Tapeworm probably with the flea dirt present. I suggest deworming abd defleaing both cats every 3 months (or once a month depending on the weather where you are and the products you use) Fleas can be brought in on your shoes after a walk in the yard, so even indoor cats can get them. The fleas would then, in turn give the cats worms. Please wash your hands after handling their (their... honestly... sigh ) blankets and them as well.

Thanks all for your help apart from vehelpfulguy. You're a * * * *. I think I spelt that right? You could check. I'm aware of my spelling mistake being in a rush though I have little time for such things.
