The word has been in use for a Yorkshireman since before 1700, which was the year in which it first appeared in print in a dictionary of slang. It was originally intended in a pejorative way, but they now accept it with pride, apparently. It referred specifically to the Yorkshire tyke, which was a kind of dog.
