well in a manner of speaking! It means you earn enough to afford a life.
It's like any other job / career / profession, I suppose, which pays the bills - if you happen to enjoy it too, then so much the better, I guess.
It's ok. Most jobs tend to "ruin" what was a good hobby :-) but if you remain interested, that's a winner. Trouble is, promotion is often via the management route thus leaving the good bits behind for the tedious slog.

The other thing to remember is that, unlike the past, things change considerably over the course of your working life. No longer enough to become skilled early on and so be skilled for life, you need to keep on top of changes and adapt/learn continually.

Your working life is likely to last, say, 40 years. Looking back to 1980, 40 years ago, work was very different, software engineers were highly skilled and well paid, with a definite career structure. Now work is more precarious with more contract / freelance work. As OG says, if it is something you enjoy then it should be satisfying, even with a few ups and downs.
it depends who you are, surely. Do you like software engineering? Would you rather be a jockey, or a male model?
"No longer enough to become skilled early on and so be skilled for life"

That really depends what your initial skills are in. E.g. people with COBOL skills were/are suddenly in huge demand because of COVID-19:

Trouble is, it's been so many years, they've probably forgotten how :-)
No we haven't!
My son is a software engineer and he’s happy.
What does he code in?
these days it's most probably C++, Java, or python.
Yes, it can may provide life satisfaction, if skills learned in the process must be used in productive way. There are many online courses of software engineering available online, which one can learn easily sitting at home. I learned software engineering course via Gayatri Mishra. She teaches software engineering course and other programming courses online, which is really good for beginners.
