it's about a 240 mile round trip with most of it being motorway, so probably about 30 litres of petrol.
Question Author
How much does a litre cost? Im not a driver.
£1.31+ per litre petrol -
Diesel from £1.36+
rough price with regional variation etc
call it £40+ as long as you don't drive a Hummer
Why do people ask this question all the time?
Surely they cannot be that dumb they cannot do the very basic sums????
depends which gear they drive in....

if they have to ask the question they could well try and drive the trip in no more than second. However, if it was Manchester to Birmingham, it most likely would be in second anyway, even for a Jeremy Clarkson or Jensen Button, given the traffic on the M6 etc.
mjwman
i'm with you on this .
and whats a normal family car.might a well how long is a piece of string
what a stupid thing to say mjwman

they ask because -
maybe the dont drive,
maybe they are planning to see if something is affordable,
maybe they dont know what car they will drive,
maybe they have no idea what their petrol consumption is because they only do short journeys so not sure how to work it out
maybe they are hiring one,
maybe they have to start making this journey and want ot work out the best way before comitting
maybe they dont know how much petrol costs and what to decide whther itd be worth them buying a car than getting the train every day
maybe they are working out how much they will need to pay their friend in pretol costs because they are driving them,
maybe they are very young an dont know abiut this sort of thing
maybe they ask for all sorts of reasons

and most of all they ask necause this is answerbank and maybe someone here drives this route often an can answer in seconds rather than having to work it all out in miles, gallons, pence etc

and the reason they are not specific is maybe because they just want a genral figure, a guess, a ball park to give them an idea of what to expect, or because they dont have those details to give, because they dont know them or they dont have the car yet to find out
Once you reach the M6 it's a straight road, but it's that winding road from Edinburgh to the M6 that's a pain especially if you get behind a coach
Not a stupid thing to say at all thank you. Nothing is stupid. Ignorant, mistaken or whatever but why stupid?
I still stand by this. It is pure laziness to expect others to answer this question.

maybe the dont drive, BUT ANYONE CAN LOOK UP A CARS MPG AND AN AA ROUTE CHECK AND DO SIMPLE SUMS!
maybe they are planning to see if something is affordable,THEN THEY CAN CHECK AS ABOVE
maybe they dont know what car they will drive, THEN THE QUESTION CANNOT BE ANSWERED. MY SKODA DIESEL DOES 60MPG BUT MY SPITFIRE DOES 29!
maybe they have no idea what their petrol consumption is because they only do short journeys so not sure how to work it out PLENTY OF WEB BASED ANSWERS TO THIS JUST LOOK UP THE CAR TYPE
maybe they are hiring one, ALL OF THE ABOVE
maybe they have to start making this journey and want ot work out the best way before comitting AGAIN, SEE ABOVE
maybe they dont know how much petrol costs and what to decide whther itd be worth them buying a car than getting the train every day ERR.. ITS ON EVERY PERTOL STATION BOARD?
maybe they are working out how much they will need to pay their friend in pretol costs because they are driving them, AGAIN ALL OF THE ABOVE OR JUST ASK THE FRIEND
maybe they are very young an dont know abiut this sort of thing LETS SEE... CAR SAY,40MPG JOURNEY SO MANY MILES..USE CALCULATOR..GET ANSWER.
maybe they ask for all sorts of reasons .BECAUSE THEY ARE "STUPID"?

I do not wish to be at all nasty but honestly just do not get this one..or your defence!
My take on the question is that lyn is working out how much she should give someone to cover petrol if they take her to Penrith. She doesn't drive so will have no idea what type of car it is, the petrol consumption or the price of petrol. She does say Approx in the question.
Maybe they can't afford the cost of petrol. I had to take out a second mortgage to fill up mine, and it is only a small one (the car, that is)!
mjwman - last time I looked this was a question and answer site. if no-one asks any questions, it defeats the purpose of having one. Why bother to answer and be rude? If you don't want to help then just ignore the question.
for goodness sake, the woman just wants a reply not a lecture!
you say "BUT ANYONE CAN LOOK UP A CARS MPG AND AN AA ROUTE CHECK AND DO SIMPLE SUMS" - so use a website to find out? Why not use this website to find out? What is so superior about using AA site?
perhaps not everyone can do simple sums - i certainly struggle on occasion
I agree that Lyn is most likley trying to work out how much to give someone who is going to drive the journey for her. A perfectly acceptable question for a site like this where a driver could give a rough idea of the cost quicker and easier than her tracking through a load of research on mpg and distances which mean nothing to a non driver. Why do some people need to be so damn rude?
Better she asks us than do what my elderly relative does and offers £5!
i think the others summed it up perfectly

its a Q&A site and they may be fairly simple sums - once you know how - but the ycould be time consuming for someone that hasnt the foggiest how to do it

as i said someone here could probably could answer in seconds

you say its lazy - maybe sometimes but most questions on here could be found if people researched,,,point is there is often no need to because to someone on here its obvious or within their knpowledge

you seem to go round the site berating people for asking questions...heres a tip - check the name of the site
I accept your explainations and apologise if I have offended anyone. Not my intention and Joko I think you will find that I try to be helpful whenever possible. I do not answer questions with which I have no experience.

I guess my point is here is, if you one has a question, why not be truthful and ask it properly? So many just ask the basics which does not give all the facts to allow a proper answer.

anyway...I'll get me coat..;)
You can't get a much more basic question than the one asked - to some people a car is just a car.
It takes a big man to make a public apology - well done!

You are right that there will be people who ask questions out of laziness, but equally there are people for whom sites like this are a lifeline and a way to have some contact with others and may even just make up stuff to ask. I'd rather waste my time answering something that was posted out of laziness than ignore a question from a genuine poster.
