was he Edward William Wakefield?
Assuming he was the Edward William Wakefield Dotty has found, then in 1901 he and Rosetta were living in 14 Northfield Parade, Cheltenham with five children: Nellie, Charles, Gertrude, John and Arthur.

In 1911 Rose was still in Cheltenham, at 10 Swindon Place, with four children: John, Gladys, Walter and Lancelot age 1 year. She stated she had produced 14 children, 10 of whom were living in 1911.

Edward was in Port Talbot, at 31 Hafod. He had four children with him: Arthur, Lilian, Hubert and Raymond, but he was in the household of Frank (1853 Wonminster Wilton) and Emily Gale (1851 Cheltenham). Frank and Emily have been married only 6 years. Edward was their son-in-law and his children were their grandchildren.

Edward was a paper-hanger and born in Cheltenham and his son Arthur was the correct age, so it looks very much that this is the same guy.
that will be him cos he had been a painter, can't find his death though. Wonder if he was alive for all the kids weddings?
looking at that 1911, how would Edward be the son-in-law do you think? Rosetta had a welsh surname when she married him (williams) but where does the Gale surname fit in? The relationships are supposed to be based on the head of house, so he's either the son-in-law of Frank Gale OR he's the son of Emily Gale and it;s her second marriae and Frank should have called him his step-son. I did find edward at home on the 1881 bit can't remember his mothers name,
There's no will proved in england or wales for him
or Rosetta is Emily Gale's daughter?
In 1881 Rosetta was with her parents Edwin and Emily Williams, so it's looking as if Emily was the connection, but the internet has suddenly gone very slow here, so struggling to find out anything more..
Sep Q 1906 Hampstead mge Emily Williams & Frank Gale
Rosetta died in 1912 do you think he may have re-married?
1901 - Emily Gale was living at 56 Southampton Road, St Pancras, with Frank Gale, and two of her children: Arthur & Kate Williams
well he left her in 1910 but was in wales, so sammo's info suggests he hadn't been around after 1910, but where did the 4 children go that were with her in 1911?
and what happened to him and his kids after 1911? I wonder if the 8 kids grew up together or were they not in touch?
Lancelot Wakefield died in Cheltenham in 1982.
There was a marriage for a Lancelot in Cheltenham, in 1933, so it looks as if he stayed there. There was a marriage for an Emily in 1926, also in Cheltenham. There was a death for a Raymond in 1912 at Neath, and a death for a Walter in 1972 in Newport, so some and some. Perhaps they moved between the two families. Haven't traced the older Wakefields. Too late tonight to start, nearly pumpkin time. Good night!

Thanks dotty thanks rose.. I don't know how the name gale comes into this..rosetta's perants were Edwin williams and Emily williams nee Logan ..Looking at this again maybe rosettas father had died and Emily married Frank Gale.. Edward was indeed a house painter..Why he left rosetta was a bit of a mystery.. they had 17 children together in total..but prior to getting married Rosetta had already had 2 children who both died the same year they were born.. a few more of rosettas children died very young and after edward left her rosetta fell pregnant again and maybe the shame of being pregnant by another man or just that she was overworked.. she decided to have it terminated only to catch septicemia herself and die. at the age of 42..between the ages of 16 and 42 she'd actually had 20 children.. All i know of Edward was he'd left rosetta never to be heard or seen again but surely some of the kids left with rosetta must have kept in touch..did he ever remarry?
Frank Gale was Emily's second husband. haven't found an obvious death for Edwin - best candidate was the one who died in Cirencester in 1893. Frank and Emily seemed to be in residence in 1901, but didn't actually marry until 1906 I think. Frank & Emily were in Port Talbot in 1911, perhaps Edward hadn't actually left Rosetta, but was helping them set up house or whatever which just happened to be on Census night.

I haven't found a second marriage for Edward. There are several for plain Edward, none for Edward W.

As you say, there were lots more Wakefield births and deaths in Cheltenham. There must have been more than one couple producing though but haven't checked to find out who they were. Would be useful at some stage to do that, just to eliminate people from the enquiries ;)

Nellie FLorence C Wakefield (b Mar Q 1890) married in Dec Q 1910 in Cheltenham, to Bertram S Sansom. In 1911 they were living at 5 Providence Place, Portland Street, Cheltenham with an adopted son, Reginald Wakefield (b 1909). Could be after Rosetta's death in 1912 they had a few more to adopt!

Edward William Charles (Chas in 1901) died Sep Q 1910. And that's as far as I've got.
It seems unlikley that Edward abandoned all his children, he may well have gone to live with a married son or daughter.

nellie and bertram were my grand perants reginald died in WW11 ..I dont know who brought up the younger wakefield lancelot wakefield was born the same year as reginald maybe reg was the illegitamate son of gertrude may wakefield who was born in 1894 but i'm only guessing that.. as you said rose edward may have been doing work in port talbot for his mother in law or even just visiting for a few days.. but i'd love to know what happened to him..
John Edmund Wakefield, born 1897, died in the first World War.
http://www.cwgc.org/s....aspx?casualty=563355

He died on 28 April 1916 and was buried in St Patrick's Cemetery, Loos. In the 'additional information' box it says son of the late Edward and Rosetta Wakefield, of Cheltenham.

Edward must have died too :(
I've checked the actual death listings for Edward between 1911 and 1919 and I can't find him....
I can't find his death either. The only other idea is that he emigrated and therefore didn't die in England & Wales. I have looked at the passenger lists and there was a Mr E Wakefield with three other Wakefields departed London bound for Gibraltar on 17 Oct 1912.
