Hi I am trying to trace the parents of Hannah Rebecca Ludlam born in 1870 in Shirland Derbyshire. She married Albert Carlin in 1892 but I am really struggling to find concrete evidence of her parents. Any help appreciated.

this isn't my specialist subject, but have you visited the local authority Parish Records offices? I helped a friend with such searches and we found quite a lot of helpful info.
Hannah was born in Shirland Derby and in 1881 her mother Mary aged 37 and Hannahs siblings, were living in a dwelling on New Building Land in Shirland, Mary was a se4rvant to the head of the house. John Riles aged 44 a miner, also a widower, Mary is listed as married. It is a strange entry as all the Ludlum children , John T aged 15, John aged 12, hannah 11 and eliza 8, are all listed as sons or daughters and the relatiuonship should be to head of house, which is John Riles, who can't be Mary's husband as he is down as a widower and Mary is down as married, most odd, have you found the Ludlum family on the 1871 census in Shirland? as all the children bar John T were born there, he was born in Buxton, It needs more analysis I think.,
RG1 3429 / 19, 32 is the ref.
Ok I have found her baptism in Shirland Derby in 1870, the daughter of Salathial Ludlum and Mary Brown I have checked the baptism of John T in Buston and he had the same parents. Salathiel Ludlum married Mary Brown in 1867 in Derby. So you need to find Salathiel Ludlum now. He's not listed in a baptism on the IGI but he is listed as being born about 1844 .
Hannah Rebecca Ludlam.......birth registered Q3 1869 Chesterfield 7b 512
If you think this is your Hannah apply for her birth certificate which should give you all the details you need.
I have just come up with the same information as DotHawkes but she posted before me!

When the 1871 census was taken, Hannah was aged one and living with her parents at Higham, Shirland. Her father is given as SALATHIEL LUDLAM aged 28. Her mother is MARY LUDLAM also aged 28. Her brother, John, is listed as aged two.
* Buxton.

Eliza was baprised in Shirland in 1873 and Salathial is listed as the father. it is odd that the mother is given as mary Brown every time, usually in baptisms on the IGI the mother's maiden name is not included.
Oh and the other John, was John George Ludlum son of Salathial and Mary, baptised at North Wingfirld derby in 1868, so they did have two sons called John and both were alive in 1881,
Salathiel Ludlam born 1843 Q2 19 432 Belper.......married Mary Brown 1867 Q3 7b 743 Chesterfield

Thanks for all your help. You are right dothawkes31 I thought it very odd that John Riles is head of household and the children listed as father = John. Where did you find her baptism? I need to delve a little further me thinks!I was hoping you experts could solve some of the riddle as I get quite impatient waiting for birth certificates etc to come. Sorry I can't help myself!!
DSJ is there only the one son John there in 1871? Where is the older one John T? He would have been 4 or 5 in 1871 i think,
Only one John listed in 1871, Dot.
that's odd, I've found John George marrying Elizabeth Spencer as an adult, and both Johns are listed on the 1881 census, i wonder where the older John was in 1871? That might be worth checking, there are only a few Ludlam families in Derby on the IGI and a thorough search should turn up the right family, I;'ve checked for John Ludlams having a son Salathiel and there are none (basing that on the eldest son being John) but there is only one Ludlam family in Shirland anyway.
there is no Salathiel turning up on the 1881 census in any location, I bet he's somewhere but recorded with a missspelling, unless craft can spot his death between 1873 and 1881

Think my brain is still fuddled from last night but I can't find the Ludlams on the 1871 census!
I'm searching the entire piece doe salathiel and just found some of my killingacks from steeple blumstead a few houses away!!! This is part of the reason i love this subject, anything can happen!
This has kust got more complicated as I think John Riles in 1881 is actually John Riley in 1901. An Eliza Ludlam married Alexander Blount in 1892......they are shown as living with John and Mary Riley in 1901 and the birth dates and places of birth match John Riles and Mary Ludlams.

John Riley 64
Mary Riley 58
Annie Brown 18
Thos Ludlam 3 months
Alexandra Blount 32
Eliza Blount 28
Mary Sophia Blount 8
Alice Blount 5
Dorothy Blount 4
Edith Annie Blount 3
1891 census

Name Age
John Riley 53
Annie Riley 13
Mary Ludlum 48
Eliza Riley 18
Thomas Riley 25
Annie Brown 8
so it looks ,ike between 1891 ans 1901 John Riley and mary Ludlum married, but prior to that, from 1881 seemingly, Mary ans John were living as man and wife, yet Salathial was still alive. He certainly was not in the Shirland area as i have checked through both pieces for 1881 shirland households, he isn;t coming up at all anywhere. Maybe mary did not know whether he was dead or not, his death may show before 1881.
I can't find his death anywhere dot.......
going by the 1891 census it looks like the other John who was John T is known as Thomas.
