Is anyone else struggling with the 1911 census? Every person I enter comes up as 'not found'. What can I be doing wrong?
Any help appreciated

I've had very good results.....are you setting the filters wide enough e.g. I usually set the year of birth to 5 years either way....
It probably is to do with the information you are inputting. If it isn;t to do with the date it could be to do with the actual name spelling. Many entries will have been misread and mistranscribed even though we get to see the primary source (the actual enunerators sheet that your ancestor filled in and signed)
what surname(s) are you lookinf fo because we could work on some variations
I had a bit of trouble with William being Wm and Richard being Rchd etc.....
A friend of ours had this, and then discovered (due to the way it's laid out) that he was putting the christian name in the surname box,and vice versa.
It might not be this but it's a thought?

Thank you to you all. Have just tried again and its found the person I was looking for! Strange but true!
good luck scooby...happy hunting
Good to see you are still hooked Scooby .... I remember some of your questions ages ago when you first started ... addictive isn't it!!! (I had a different used name then - had to change it - long story!)
My great grandmother had, I'm told, 20 children. I have found 17 of them. I was looking forward to the 1911 to find the others, but no luck. I've been told that a lot of families didn't fill it in as a protest about votes for women. Anyone else heard this? This is my first posting on this site so if this has already been discussed I apologise.
yes sky that was the case apparently, however, the kind of woman who would have that kind of opportunity to make such a protest, though not divided by class or age, may have had a more independant lifestyle than a mother with a family to look after and a husband to fill the census form in.
the 1911 census should tell you the number of children born to the marriage, which would tell you whether the ones you have not found were born before or after the census was taken in the spring of 1911
I hadn't thought about it that way dot. I think the children I'm looking for were born after the 1901. They were married in 1893 and I've found a child every year up to 1902. I've found quite a few on cityark (kent). I like the chase, so I'll keep looking!

Nice to hear from you again Poetrylover.
Yes am still hooked. It's a long process tho - there were so many of them in those days! Work is still getting in the way which does hamper me but I keep battling on!
Will always keep asking questions so 'keep 'em peeled'!
I think you've jinxed me scooby.......had trouble finding my grandad's family in the census......it wasn't until I'd put about 4 of the childrens' names in that I got a match, yet lo and behold all the other names and correct birth dates were in there....weird.

Sorry craft1948 - I must have that effect on the 1911 census! At least you got there in the end - I'm still having some problems with various members of the family, but I keep sticking at it. Patience is a virtue - or so they say.
Can I ask a supplementary? please. Where do you access the 1911 census. I have subscribed to Ancestry.com and looked at several others but could only get as far as the 1901 census. Grateful for any help you can offer.
