Been looking at the 1911 census ( very expensive by the way, 6 odd gone in a flash!) I've previously researched my great grandad, so already knew his approximate date of birth, he appears on both the 1891 and 1901 census, but there is no trace of him on the 1911 one. He got married 15 days after the census was taken ( i have a copy of the marriage certificate) so I also tried searching the address on the marriage certificate, but he wasn't there on the night of the census ( though I did find that his mother was living there)
Any ideas why he would not have appeared on the census?
thanks in advance, I will reply to any answers, but won't be online again til thurs eve so bear with me!

Hi Slinkycat - I dont think EVERY county is yet live on the 1911 .... so perhaps he was in a county that is not yet listed on line perhaps?
Also, Slinkycat, this page might give you some answers .... it gives reasons why you might not be able to find your relative:

There are lots of transcription errors on the index. I have had no end of trouble finding people because of incorrectly spelt names - especially the forename.

Also the year of birth is sometimes not shown correctly - whether this is because the householder filled in the form incorrectly, or because they have just deduceted the stated age from 1911 to get the year of birth, I don't know. If they have done the latter then somebody born in November 1905 - who was 5 on census day - would be shown as being born in 1906!

Try searching using just the Surname - hopefully it's not "Smith".

As I posted earlier, I don't think that the counties are completely online. I cannot find any of my family or my huband's family. They lived in Lancashire, Hertfordshire, Cheshire and Yorkshire - yet nothing! When I just put in the surname and England, nothing appears, so they can't all be missing.
Just found my ancestors - just put in the surname and nothing else. When I put the full name in I got nothing, then it came up with just the surname!

Thanks for the replies, the county is Gloucestershire, which does appear to be live. Rollo, I tried doing +or- 2 years, but still nothing, maybe will try again with just the surname, but surely if you put that in and no date or county it comes up with loads? I take it thats what you did Carol, the surname and no other details whatsoever?
had a look at those reasons echo, maybe he was staying somewhere else, as it says "they may be included in the census at that address" very frustrating!
Slinky, I can't find my great grandmother. I know for a fact she was in this country (she was terribly proud of the fact she had never left England). She must be there somewhere, but I suspect a transcription error is the problem.

I've only done a few searches (say <20) and already found 5 transcription errors. Not good!!!!
DEon't forget that if you find transcription errors you must report them as you get credits iof u are using find my past
make sure you confirm you have the right familt member by cross checking the other likely members, it is expensive i know, but if you are careful you can eliminate alot of possibles to the poiunt where yopu should be sure you are paying to see a useful original
