There was a huge French colonial influence in Egypt - you only have to look at the buildings along the coastal strip in Alexandria - 'Cannes with measles' was Michael Palin's summary.....Egypt resists viewing itself as part of Africa and most Egyptians go politely quiet if referred to as African. Consequently the whole French colonial Africa shtick gets focused on Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia.
