Does FireWire (480Mbps) transfer faster than IDE? The question came about because there are external FireWire disks for a decent price and I am wondering if this is the way to go for speed increase

I have now answered my own question. ATA133 is 133MBps. FireWire is 480Mbps. Therefore ATA133 is faster until FireWire reaches its projected 1600Mbps speed.
I read MAC are bringing out Firewire-800 which, at 800 Mbps is considerably faster than the PC USB2 (but still not as fast as UDMA 133). The Firewire-1600 can't be that far behind.
