Do Microsoft, or any other company, have a program that can scan your PC and tell if you are missing anything from the registry.Stupidly, I messed about with my registry settings and am now having problems with my laptop.I have tried to restore to various previous dates, but I just get a message stating that the restore did not work.I dont really want to have to use my restore discs if I can help it.

go to www.download.com or www.majorgeeks.com and search for a registry scanner and fixer, preferably Register Mechanic (major geeks has this under the Registry sub-menu). These sites allow you to search and download freeware and shareware software.

Playing with your registry does mess the machine up. I had to reinstall my XP to fix mine.

Anyway

...let me know how you get on. (sorry I pressed SUBMIT before I finished typing!)

hi there

do you have a copy of your XP disk - if so, why not boot your PC from the disk, go through the startup options, select "install windows xp" and then select "repair windows".....

dont select "repair using repair console" - bad news if youre not a technical bod like me...

this will reinstall the basic registry entries required to run windows - but youll have to reinstall any programs that dont work still afterwards

good luck, and remember... by REPAIRING windows in this manner, you'll NOT lose any settings, programs, documents etc..... but just in case it's always best to make a backup of any documents onto a floppy disk, memory stick etc.... you can do this in safe mode if necessary..
