Presumably ARAISE or ARAYSE, but which? (and why?)

Arayse. Shakespeare used that spelling. 'Rays' is a poetic word for 'looks' according to Chambers,
Oops! I forgot to add that the 'AE' presumably refers to the poet A E Housman.

Thanks, Monster. I'd read the entry for RAY quite a few times without seeing "a look or glance".

I'd never come across Woody Strode either
Nor had I, Pld, but he played the part of the gladiator who fought Kirk Douglas in 'Spartacus'. We live and learn...they'll be expecting us to remember Gabby Hayes next! (Actually, I do...and fondly...the only chuck-wagon man to finish up with an arrow between his shoulder-blades in almost every film he played in!)
Quizmonster is right with "arayse" but the poet is not Housman. It's the Irish poet George William Russell (1867-1935) who always used the pseudonym AE.
And while we're on this crossword, can anyone tell me why "Staff Officer about to fly, without wings, in shock?" leads to "stonked"?
