People pay more than £100 for a half smoked cigar believed[ believed, mark you; to have been one of Winston Churchill's. And some idiot paid something like £3,000 , plus commission, at auction, for a perfectly ordinary Spanish type leather chair, like a modern deck chair, used on ships in the early C19. The reason ? It was the chair used by Napoleon on his way to exile, or so the provenance apparently proved, otherwise it was worth about £100. ( I know this because I was the idiot. I am consoled by the thought that some other idiot must have thought it worth one bid less !)
And that's what happens in auctions. It only needs two people to make a price. They could be shrewd or mental, it makes no difference.

Yes, I still have it. It's in what is laughingly called 'the sun room', as in the solar star, not the tabloid, though I may have studied the philosophical musings of page three girls in it.
And yes, I do have a collection of Napoleon stuff e.g letters written by him and one by "Not tonight" Josephine. The last is amusing, because she is writing to intercede on behalf of a poor plaintiff in an action. She somehow forgets to mention, in her earnest plea, that the plaintiff is her cousin. And one of Napoleon's speaks louder than the words. He gives a suggestion,phrased by way of a helpful hint , to an army section. Some officer has scrawled in the margin "Immediate action!". I suspect that Napoleon's suggestions, not followed, were believed to have serious consequences for one's life or career !

By the way, it is possible to make money from such things. Obviously the buyer of the house may treat it as a museum; he might even get tax advantages by having it run or owned as a charity; and charge admission. But the history of the chair includes a phase when the naval officer who first acquired it was charging visitors a shilling a time to sit in it!
About the price of an equivalent dump-style house in London. And they have usually had just scum living in them not a famous celebrity.
It will be interesting to see what is done with it. Would the council actually allow change of use to a museum? Parking for a start would be a nightmare, although I think the NT do manage with buses/coaches.

yes, the Battersea development has on board the same starchitect who designed the Walkie-Scorchie, so don't leave your car parked nearby. Names have star power, which is also true for the Lennon house. Didn't I read last night that it was bought by an American?
I don't know what Liverpool prices are like, but you'd pay far more for that in London even if the only previous inhabitant was me.

Fred Ah well at least something is being done. Pity about those chimneys though . I suppose they can be used in some way. Ventilation or central heating exhaust or even put TV aerials inside them like we use to in Windsor Castle , not much good for dishes though, and they couldn't go on the outside that would destroy chimney's ' beauty '.
