Following PaulaHollins's recent thread about installing Sims 2 on an external drive, would this actually work? What about registry settings etc?

they would be stored on the boot drive

Wherever you install anything, the registry still sits on the boot partition and gets modified by the install. Only the program files are installed to the location you specify.
