Low Fat Easy Banana Ice Cream

Bananas always seem to go to waste; they start going black before you have a change to eat them, easy banana ice cream is a great recipe to make the most of ripe bananas and cut down on waste.

Banana ice cream is a perfect creamy treat to cool down with on a hot summer’s day and it is extremely quick and easy to make. When every you have very ripe bananas freeze them so they don’t go to waste and they will be ready for a hot day when you want some ice cream. This recipe take 20 minutes so you don’t have to wait long and most people will have the ingredients already in their kitchen. If you don’t have yogurt you can use milk, cream or buttermilk for a more indulgent version of this banana ice cream.

If you and your family are trying to be healthy, eat more fruit and cut down on fat in your diet but can’t quite give up dessert, low fat easy banana ice cream is perfect. This ice creams main ingredient is raw bananas, so a small portion will contain one of your recommended five a day and a large portion has even more. Ripe bananas are very sweet and contain lots of their own natural sugars so unlike other ice cream recipes all you need to add is two spoonfuls of honey, there is no need to add any extra sugar.  The final ingredient is low fat yogurt, which has very little fat compared to the typical ice cream ingredient of cream. If you use a probiotic yogurt, as well as being low fat, it helps improves your cholesterol.  Research shows that eating probiotic yogurt lowers LDL, bad cholesterol and increases HDL, good cholesterol.

This tasty treat will very quickly become a family favourite. Children will love the sweet, creamy flavour while eating a healthy diet of fruit and yogurt.

Ingredients

  • 6 ripe bananas, peeled, chopped
  • 2tbsp honey or sugar
  • 170ml fat free yogurt

Method

  1. Wrap bananas in cling film and freeze over night.
  2. Remove from the freeze and allow to soften for 10 to 20 minutes.
  3. Blend honey in and gradually blend yogurt in, once smooth don’t blend anymore yogurt in, it is ready to eat.
