That's an oddly worder question.

Are you being asked to add together

16 (plus) 3/4 of 20

= 16 + 15

= 31
" ... oddly worded ... "
Hi, I know how to do it but I would probably confuse you trying to explain it in words. You need to work out the common denominator (the number that both of the bottom numbers of the fractions will go in to - in this case 6 and 4 will both go into 12). Maybe you could google the term and see if any of the pages appeal to you. Sorry for not being more help.
I have a harder maths question for you?

What number is greater than 9.9999999 recurring, but less than 10?
Question Author
i don;t know jonny, you tell me
Not quite - you find the common denominator when adding or subtracting fractions.
Your question is worded unclearly - either it's JJ's answer or it means
16 3/4 times 20 (of means times) which if you change 16 3/4 to all quarters you get
67/4 x 20 = 335
I want to know the answer to JB's question.

Is it a paradox of some sort?
If working in a base other than 10 then any number between 9.9 recurring and the base number will be greater.
Where the base number is >10, of course.
I agree with JJ - it's 31. Surely the worded question means 'add 16 and 15' - the 15 being 3/4 of 20.
Hi JonnyBoy12
Couldn't it be argued that there cannot be a number between 9.99999 recurring and 10 because the two numbers are in fact the same.
It is accepted that 1/3 = 0.33333... recurring.
So 3/3 (which equals 1) = 0.99999...
so 30/3 (which equals 10) = 9.99999...
sophie- the easiest way to find 3/4 of 20 is to work out 1/4 first then multiply the answer by 3
One quarter of 20 is 5 (since a quarter means to divide into four).
If one quarter = 5 then three quarters = 3 lots of 5 which is 15.
Turn the figures into quarters and divide the smaller into larger number.

16x4+3=67
20x4=80
67/80 =1.194

nb...its a long time since I went to school.
I don't think so tambourine. I agree with jj the answer is 31.
Sorry tambo I can't follow that.
For example 67/80 is less than one so can't be 1.194.
And i can't see where your 67/80 comes from
Im jumping on the 31 band wagon. 3/4 of 20 is 15 then plus 16 is 20
Seemples!!
Factor I multiplied all by 4 to get quarters and 16 + 3/4 divides into 20 once plus a bit.

does that work ?
Oh, I see where you're coming from Tambo but I think you're making it more complicated than it is.
Jonnyboy12- I'd be interested to see your solution to the 9.9999... question if you have one.
Maybe your answer is 10- (1/0.99999... recurring).
