Whats the best way to see how much gas gets used?

I don't think I can afford to have the central heating on this year,the boiler is about 100 years old and not efficient.The landlord wont fix what ain't broke soooo I am left wondering if I do put the heating on,is it cheaper to leave it on or just put it on once a day for a bit?

I've always believed that it's easier to leave it on all the time but set it so it only kicks in below a certain temperature - that way you don't have to keep heating the water up from cold each time.

I suppose its the initial cost that worries OH.Am I right in saying once the house has warmed up,it wont cost as much to keep it warm?Thats my philosophy but OH is in need of convincing.

If you have access to reading the gas meter, take a reading at a certain time, try the heating your way for 24 or 48 hours then check the gas reading again at the same time and you can tell how much gas has been used
Repeat the process trying the heating the OH way for another 24 or 48 hours and then compare the readings. You will then know which way uses the most gas.

A 100 year old boiler? Are you sure? That does seem incredibly old, and sorry I have not got any advice for you, as my landlord's one is only about 10 years old. So no help there then. Hope you do get it sorted though.
