A work colleague of mine visited his GP for a medical for renewal of his HGV licence .

After undergoing an ECG , his gp was worried about the results and referred him to a heart consultant .

It transpires that 2 of 3 valves which meet at a junction were totally blocked and the third was almost blocked . ( he had no symptoms )
The consultant advise him that he was extremely lucky to have visited his gp when he did , otherwise he was on his way to an eminent major heart attack , which would have been lights out .

He had to have a major operation and is back at work now .

On a previous visit to my gp , the nurse advise me that they offered an ECG to patients .
I made appointments and forgot to go on 2 occasions .

I went to the third appointment today and the result is that i'm ok .

You might wish to see if your GP practice offers this service , and take advantage of it .

Is the moral of the story that if you don't go to the GP then you don't get bad news whereas if you do go it's only a 50/50 chance that it'll be good?
pleased to hear you're in the clear. Do all surgeries offer ECGs?

I dont know if there is a moral to the story or not - i just thought how lucky he was .

And - if your GP practice is offering a services like this - then why not take advantage .

As they say , no point in closing the stable door after the horse has bolted
'' I made appointments and forgot to go on 2 occasions '' .

You should be ashamed to have forgotten your 2 appointments as other people who may have a heart problem are waiting in a queue!!!

jno - i dont know - my GP practice is associated with a university and they have trainee doctors at the surgery as part of their course .

It may be that the practice is able to offer services , that other practices are not able to provide

Those two ' missed' appointments were rare occurances , i can assure you

In any event it appears that they text patients to remind them of appointments and if confirmation of attendance is not received , the slot is offered to someone else .

Am i forgiven ?
Thanks for your post. The next time I get down to the local quacks I might remember to ask them about ECGs. However I've only been there once in the last 20 years so that might be quite a long wait!

The only thing that scares me about the possibility of a heart attack is the pain which might be associated with it. Death has never scared me. (I regard it as 'nothingness' and I can't see how anyone could ever be scared of 'nothing'). If someone told me that I was about to die within the next few minutes I can honestly say that I wouldn't be bothered in the least, as long as there was no great pain associated with it. (Again, I can't understand why anyone would ever be bothered by such a thought).

So I'm certainly not rushing down to the local quacks' surgery.
Whatever, One day I will die... and that is the day my worries end!
I completely agree with Buenchico on this. Death is meh! at best. I just don't want it to hurt!
Having said that, if you are a little skittish about this stuff then my advice is to give blood. They are legally obliged to tell you if something bad is in there and you may save a life. Win/win I say!
Oh, and I just gotted banned for life so I need a replacement :p

The first I may understand, the 2nd NO, as for the text reminder, you are joking!!!
To be fair trt it might be 2 out of 50......
Hang on, I take that back. He forgot. Shame on him for wrecking the appt system for that day and possibly that week, and also stealing someone else's chance at that appt. I agree. Selfish.

//....as for the text reminder, you are joking!!! //

Why do you think i'm joking ?
Ta, Mojo-Jo-Jo.
why trt?
Because not everyone has a mobile.
Berti gives good advice, but could I put this into perspective.

Assuming all the facts are t hand, it is very unusual to have 3 valves "blocked" and for the patient to be symptomless and even more uncommon for this to cause "heart attacks" Unless of course there was a misinterpretation and that in fact the valves were fine, but 3 coronary arteries were blocked, in which case it would be extremely unlikely that one would be symptom free.

Also one can have a normal ECG and die of a heart attack an hour later.

aaaghhh, now you've put me right off, Sqad!
jno...LOL...it´s not the normal ECG that gives you a heart attack. ;-)
