Hey all!

Making sausage casserole for dinner tonight, and the packet says to fry the sausages before putting them in the dish in the oven, but when I have made it before, I just put them in the casserole and in the oven for an hour and they have been fine!

Should I fry them first? Do you guys fry them first or just straight in the oven?
Have to admit to having never fried a sausage before!

Ta!

I fry first because they get a nice colour, also so they don't make the sauce too greasy if they exude their own fat - ewww...that sounds right yuk !! Casserole will be lovely though!!

Thanks mercia!

So it is not vital to fry them first, I wont be doing anything really bad if I dont. Although if I can be bothered to attempt it, I may do!
Frying them only makes them look better. I don't like sausages really...so putting them straight in is much preferable for me.
i never bother frying them first. they generally brown off in the casserole if you fish them out and sit them on top of all the veg towards the end of cooking.
haven't had sausage casserole for ages, i feel one coming one, thanks for the reminder :)
I actually like sausage casserole......just don't eat the sausage..lol

The boys scoff it though..

I love sausage casserole! But then I love pretty much all casseroles.

I'm having it with a jacket potato and my OH is having it with rice.
Love cooking them as they are so easy, chuck everything in, leave it for an hour and there you go, dinners ready!
ummmm, have you tried vegetarian sausages? asda do one in the freezer section which is really nice, can't remember the name of it unfortunately.
or is it the texture you don't like?
or with a big pile of mash, wiggal. trouble is, i could eat a whole casserole and a whole pan of mash all by myself.
i like you fry them in a non stick pan for a few minutes before putting in casserole - i find it gives a better colour and gets rid of some fat. Have not had for a while - you have put me in mind for one now.
A guy I knew told me he once worked in a factory making sausages.

He didn't eat sausages as a result.

Oh yes, love it with mash!
When my mum makes it for me she does it with mash and peas.

Can't be bothered with doing mash just for me though, so just going to put a jacket potato in the oven at the same time as the casserole and hopefully will be done around the same time.
It's the taste I don't like....I don't really like bacon either. I hate salt...and they both taste too salty for me.

I love a fry up though.....extra egg extra mushrooms...
and beans ummm, don't forget the beans.
actually, we're having beans and cheese on toast tonight, toasted carrot and pumpkin seed bread.
but tomorrow night i think we'll be having sausage casserole :)

I just had cheese and ham on toast for lunch, was lovely!

Hoping I enjoy tonights dinner more then I did last nights. Made taglietelle carbonara for my OH as he said he loved it, only thing is I cant stand the stuff!
Made it, served his up and then added loads of cheddar to the sauce on mine to try and make it more cheesey and less carbonarary, but it was still horrible so I hardly touched it!
