I always thought that the body took around 4 hours to digest food, which is why we feel hunger after this amount of time.
I ate last night at about 7.30 in the evening and went to bed at 10.30.
So why did I wake up with terrible indigestion at about 4.30 this morning (along with a blocked nose - which cleared eventually)?

Indigestion is not always caused by inDIGESTION.

Do you see what I mean?

There are many causes, so Google "Indigestion causes."
I get this, but I have a hiatus hernia which causes acid to come back up in my sleep. It's horrible, but lots of people have it without even realising.
Could have been all sorts, from unreleased burps to anxiety. Blocked nose? probably been snoring.
Blocked nose = sinuses

You are all right in some respect, and I get it Sqad, but always thought it was trapped wind from food digesting.
This was a big ball of wind in the centre of my chest, which eventually dispersed.
Scarlett - yes I also get acid reflux, often during the night when lying down, usually after a big Indian meal. My own fault i know, but I just luurrve Indian food (I do get a high when I eat one after not having had one for ages).
And yes Mosaic, I got quite a roasting this morning (from she who must be obeyed) for snoring during the night. Actually woke her up - an unforgivable sin.

PS.
Interesting that mosaic mentions anxiety. I do suffer from anxiety, and usually cannot get back to sleep if I wake up in the night (usually caused by the call of nature - an age thing I'm afraid) because my brain starts to go into overdrive worrying about things.
And now I think about it, I don't recall having the pain when I got up to go to the loo, but I had it when I returned to lying in bed. Veeerrrryyy interesting!! (Rowan and Martins Laugh In).
