I have an old wooden sewing box, about 2ft x 1ft.
Unfortunately it has a rather odd smell which smells very like stale tobacco! Not sure what it really is.
I have tried bicarb, air fresheners, perfume etc but the smell persists.
Any ideas what might freshen it up mite? Would be grateful for any suggestions.

I would try "Bounce" fabric conditioner for the tumble dryer. put a few sheets on the bottom of the box and leave for a few days. or as long as poss. This works well for books that are a bit musty. Worth a try.
