I seem to remember ads in various magazines for stretch chair covers to fit a vast array of relatively standard chairs.  Can anyone remember who made them and/or whether you can still get them?  We have those wooden armed chairs in our kitchen and I need something quick and easy to recover them with.

I tried them and they now seem to be all made to measure!  The things I remember were quite ghastly (!) but virtually stretched to fit any given chair.  I think though, you are right and it was Plumbs who used to do them.Oh dear - I can see a struggle with the sewing machine approaching.
When we go on holiday,we rent holiday cottages and most of them seem to be furnished with furniture that has  "ahem" seen better days. The cleverest trick that I have seen is to put throws over the manky upholstery. Provided that your padding is good...voila, instant country chic..easily removed to wash and no sewing!!

Woofgang - no, these are really, really manky!  The dogs sleep on them, and the cats etc. etc.  Also, they have wooden arms (like a carver chair) so that any throws sort of fall through the holes - as do the dogs when they forget where they are.  Also, throws are yet another thing to go into the wash and given the state of the fields at the moment, and the dogs' paws, this would almost be a daily event.

Sorry, I sound very negative!  But you inspired me and I have rung Plumbs and they do still do the stretch covers.  They just don't like to advertise them!  Who can blame them.  I must be the last person in the world to want crimplene chair covers.  (We used to have a french teacher who, I swear, wore them as well!).  Thanks for your help.  :-)
