can i wash them and put them in a stainless steel bowl & cover with cling film,i have something in the back of my mind they shoul'nt be put in stainless steel

Aluminum? Perhaps not, but no problem with stainless steel. I would suggest that if you need to store them for an extended period, don't wash them though... place them in your stainless steel bowl, place a slightly damp paper towel over them and follow that with the cling wrap... should be good in the fridge for about 3 to 5 days, but check them regularly...
