Hi!
I have a recipe which asks for 200g of flageolet tinned beans. My question is this, does it mean a 200g tin of beans (weight includes the liquid) or 200g drained beans. This makes a big difference as it's the difference between a big tin and a small tin.

I would imagine that it would mean Drained because if the recipe has other liquid then then it would turn out really runny instead of just moist.
Surely it says in your recipe Drained or whatever.
If the beans normally come in a 200g tin then I would assume they meant the tin drained not 200g of beans. However that said, this interpretation could explain why some of my cooking is pants!
i have a tin of asda flageolot beans sitting in front of me and the weight says 290g, then underneath it says net drained weight 175g. if i was doing a recipe which asked for 200g i would just use this tin. depending how much bigger a large tin is, i would use that if it was the only one i could get, unless it was a giant tin.....
does the recipe call for you to be absolutely exact? if it's a stew or soup i can't really see it making much difference. to be honest, i always tweak recipes to suit my own taste and usually use far more veg than it says.
ps. what are you making?

ethandron, this is the recipe I'm making : Grilled veggie macaroni

It's the third line that I'm not sure about, is it 400g drained beans or a 400g tin? I'm only doing half the recipe as it's just for 2, hence my 200g question.
To me that is a 400g tin of beans drained which would be a 200g tin for your purposes. But as ethandron has said, it probably wont make a huge difference to the recipe.
if i was doing that dish i'd use for a 200g tin of beans and drain them

Thanks warpig and mccluff so a 200g tin it will be only that the smallest tins here in France are 400g so need to use the rest up in something else.
When I follow a recipe for the first time I like to keep to it and then adapt it once I've tasted it for the next time.
Have a look at your recipe again. Instruction 3 says use beans, drained. Cheers, Andy

Now ACB, I have read it and I KNOW it says drained. That isn't my question (I wouldn't dream of using flageolet beans which hadn't been drained and rinsed.) I don't know if it means that the recipe needs a 400g tin (so with liquid) or 400g beans once drained.
If you read it again you'll understand my dilemma.
all those recipes sound good coccinelle. how did the one you made turn out?

Hi ethandron
made it last night and it's quite nice considering no fish or meat in it. I had to make my own cheese sauce as can't buy it here but next time I do it I'll add some tabasco or something to give it a bit more umph. Read your answer on the bleeding vine thread. How do you order a row of vines plus wine for a Christmas pressie? it'll be a good idea for future reference.
the one we were given was by a company called wineshare, and ours was at domaine du grand mayne. i believe there are lots of companies which do something similar though. it's a gimmick really, but for anyone who has even a slight interest in wine and/or food, it's a bit different for a christmas (or any) present. because we go to france for long trips too, it was nice to go and have a personal tour round the vinyard and actually see the grapes growing. we've drunk all the wine now, but i've kept some of the empty bottles with our own personalised label on them.
i may give your recipe a go as we're trying to get away from having meals based round meat all the time. if i do i'll take your tip and spice it up a bit.
