Why are all the schools shutting cos of some snow? No kids at school, some parents having to stay home, others dodging work, no public transport in some areas?
Come on, dont we remember WALKING to school??? or work or shops???

Its like a different planet these days, we've all gone soft.

just saw a reporter on the news saying it was thick snow - yet the grass was poking through it couldnt believe my eyes
It's all down to how much compensation someone can claim if they are involved in an accident nowadays. If someone is on a bus and it skids in the snow and you are thrown to the floor apparently you can claim millions of pounds in damages!
It's Health & Safety mostly (as usual). Where I work the site staff couldn't clear all the walkways and it was felt that it would be dangerous for all the students to be on site. After all, some parent would be bound to sue if their cherub slipped up!
Also in our school a majority of the children are bussed in and buses weren't running
Our town mall was full of kids today , I think the schools were still closed .....no snow here since yesterday afternoon btw .....and their parents went to work .
I posted something similar yesterday weeal. Nobody agreed with me.

I totally agree with you. I commented to Mr LL about the 'deep' snow with the grass poking through on the news. Deep snow, what a laugh!! Let's hope London gets some really deep snow and see what happens then.

Everybody used to make an attempt to go to school or work years ago and I can't remember buses stopping because of a bit of snow.

You can't blame some people because they would have gone to work if there was some transport to go on - but yes in general I think any excuse and a lot of people won't go to work.

I think a lot of people will have made up there mind not to go as soon as there was mention of snow.
So no buses ran in London on Monday. How bad is this? If we kept snowploughs on eternal standby for the once in a decade occurrence of serious snow, there would be accusations of money-squandering.

It really is simple. Every 10 years or so London get loads of snow and stops. Live with it.
I certainly remember walking miles to school in the snow
back in the late 60's!!

It is the nanny state of today, with everybody being mollycoddled!!
No wonder some employers prefer to employ 'foreigners' from other countries.

Hi Weeal Teachers are Lazy!
I was referring to the Total company and it's plans to bring in workers from Italy, and the wildcat strikes it has caused.

Some people consider anybody with a dark skin or 'different' surname to be foreign regardless of where they were born.

Hence the 'foreign' is apostrophes.
I don't envy the Headteachers having to make the decision - if they close parents complain and they have to weigh that up against parents screaming compensation if their child has an accident. (I'm not a teacher btw)
We Namby Pamby Now! Education has Lost it Bigtime!
weeal am on your side - unfortunately its a way of life now - things are much more suburbanised resulting in heavier traffic - its just not safe for some kids to walk to school. Parents have different committments too (don't lets get started there!) often several jobs to keep things afloat. I can remember walking a thousand miles to school but that was a while ago. Also(never begin a word with a preposition) think lots of people aren't fortunate enough to love their jobs therefore a day off is a bonus to them. If it cheers you up, have just spent three hours clearing ice/snow from the farm track so we can at least surface long enough to re-stock on red wine!

Yeah it really does look like a Health & Safety issue eh, lots of fluffy white stuff that melts on yer hand

Seriously tho, it is awful, I did drive in it to work on Monday and was prepared to walk home if necessary if the car got stuck. And it will be like a sheet of ice here tomorrow (frozen up already) and I will still be at work even though I hate the place.
Interesting to see Ethel being so politically correct!

If he has a different coloured skin (God had a purpose), if he speaks a different language, if he comes from a different country, then he is a foreigner, surely?

Why France, Germany, Austria, Britain? All with boundaries, all with national languages. Load of nonsense.
lol @ weeal - not heard the word pallavar for yonks!!!
What snow? not had any today in sunny Kirkcaldy. You only ever get a fuss when you have a wee drappy doon South.
