Chef is the shortened term for ''Chef de cuisine'', meaning the head person in the kitchen.
sorry but last answer is incorrect! :-)

A chef is someone who is a qualified cook ( completed Collage courses ect) whilst a cook i someone who work's in a kitchen cooking. This does not mean that a cook is not trained, it just means that they do not have the College certificates that someone that call's them self a Chef would have! (I know this as I am a Chef my self)

The chef who runs a kitchen is called 'Head Chef'
