not ale and stout? half ale and half stout/brown ale, thats what it is round here anyways.

It's for an old recipe for a type of leek & potato soup, I can't imagine you'd add brown ale to it, but thanks very much.

is it an american recipe? i'm sure their semi skimmed milk is half n half
There is an American type of milk called Half & Half. It's half milk and half cream, I think.
yes half and half is almost like a single cream here in the states and you can get it fat free too. i would say to make it up yourself, you should mix single cream with some regular milk until it finely coats the back of a tablespoon when it runs off. i see you are making soup, i would maybe use just single cream or a low fat one if that would work but thats me just being health conscious, some recipes dont work if you try to do them low fat.
