both are expensive. Nice is a very pleasant place. But Venice is the one you should see before you die. It is unique. I have not found it smelly, but that may come and go.

Nice, definitely. - Venice is OK if you are interested in buildings and history, but it's smelly and crowded and definitely not a place to visit in summer and I didn't find it atmospheric at all, just tiring.

Venice, without a doubt. So beautiful and I've never found it to be particularly smelly. Nice is nothing special - no different to so many other places - but Venice is unique.

Also, depends on how long you intend going for. Venice might be OK for a few days sightseeing, but, in my opinion, is not a good holiday destination.

Although, I have to admit I am not one who finds beauty in Cities and buildings and loads of people.

Venice is a big non no during the Summer.

Very, very crowded - very hot - very smelly (because of the heat).

They both have a grandiose air of romance aboutthem, so in theory there is not much to decide. Both are very expensive and not much difference in travel time.

If I had the choice I would opt for Nice. There are more near by days trips (Monte Carlo being one of them) and I would err towards French Cuisine over Italian.
