Is there a shortage on or have shops stopped selling it? Can only find it online at Sainsburys but they don't have it in store? Even tried in Boots but they don't sell it anymore? Can anyone help or I'm in the dog house. :-(

I had this problem last year. Don't despair.

If the larger Boots branches don't have it, try the smaller, independent chemists/pharmacies - it IS still sold for medicinal use as well as catering use.

Anyway, how do people ice their Christmas cakes without it?

Thanks BigMac, I asked in quite a big Boots and they said they dont stock it anymore? Ill have a trundle round the smaller chemists I suppose. I used to get in as part of the super cook range but everywhere I look has every conceivable bottle by them except the Glycerine?? Eh?? Thought I'd finished shopping... Hmft! :-(
Here is an icing recipe from the cookery writer Nigel Slater:the whites of two eggs-beaten...to this add,in two lots,600gm of unrefined golden icing sugar along with two tsp of lemon juice(with the second lot of sugar)-beat well with a wooden spoon. His recipes always work-I intend to use it tomorrow.
You can also use a small amount of liquid glucose in place of glycerine to stop the icing from getting too hard.
Check out your local shops, our local Londis sells it, especially at this time of year.

Thanks all, I managed to pass the buck to my Sis and she found some in her local Morrisons. I can understand if my normal supermarkets had run out but they seem to have stopped stocking it altogether? :-S
