i would like to make a houmous alternative, using only ... sweet potato, sesame oil, chick peas, garlic. do you think the sesame oil would work in place of tahini (sesame paste) and olive oil? do you think my idea will work? and does anyone have a recipe for this (giving quantities), cos if not it will be trial and error.

Mandi - I could be wrong - I have been many times in my lifetime - but I don't think the sweet potato will work very well taste-wise in the hummus. Here in the USA we often call chick peas garbanzos. There are many recipes that exclude the tahini - here are a couple of them for you:

Curried Hummus

2 (15.5 ounce) cans chick peas (garbanzo beans), rinsed and drained
2 tablespoons olive oil
3 garlic cloves, crushed
4 teaspoons curry powder
6 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1/2 cup water
Salt, to taste
Hot sauce, to taste

Put all ingredients in a food processor and blend until smooth. Serve (drizzled with olive oil, if desired) with pita chips.

Metric:
880.4 g chick peas (garbanzo beans), rinsed and drained
30 ml olive oil
9 g garlic cloves, crushed
8 g curry powder
90 ml fresh lemon juice
120 ml water
Salt, to taste
Hot sauce, to taste

Easy Hummus

1 (15 ounce) can garbanzo beans, drained, liquid reserved
1 clove garlic, crushed
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon olive oil

In a blender or food processor combine garbanzo beans, garlic, cumin, salt and olive oil. Blend on low speed, gradually adding reserved bean liquid, until desired consistency is achieved.

Metric:
1 (15 ounce) can garbanzo beans, drained, liquid reserved
1 clove garlic, crushed
4 g ground cumin
3 g salt
15 ml olive oil

hi there, the reason i ask is cos i bought a supermaket roasted butternut squash houmous, which was equal percentage chickpeas to squash flesh. it was delicious. we dont buy squashes in our house, but very often have sweet potato. my boyfriend says he doesnt like houmous, but i think its the chick peas hes not keen on. was going to try and make it and just call it a dip instead!! i had it in my head that squash and sweet potato was similar. am i way off the mark?
Mandi - that is a difficult question for me to answer, because I love squash of all kinds - my favorite is acorn - and I am not a fan of sweet potatoes - so they don't taste the same to me. It would be a healthy dish - sweet potatoes have a lot of good nutrients - I wish I liked them!!!

Why don't you just make the hummus and use a small portion of it to add some sweet potato to and see how it tastes to you - then you will know if it ruins it or not before you mix the whole recipe together.

i actually think the butternut squash and sweet potato are similar enough to substitute one for the other in this instance. i'd do what's been suggested though, and just do a small amount first to try it. and call it a dip!!!
As above - you can use the S/Potato - recipe here as the only 'base' or add other things too like roasted red peppers- deseed, roast, skin and add to houmous....so I'm sure chick peas will be good too.

Squashes also make a houomous, which really is just blended veg, so try it out - and serve best on warm toasted pittas or Turkish flat bread with crumbled feta and pistachios as on the link..
have just bought some sweet potato humous from m & s, and it has 10% sweet potato to 38% chickpeas, if you wanted ot use that as a guide for the amount to use.
