Has anyone out there eaten at this restaurant recently ?The menu looks gorgeous on their website so we have booked in for Christmas Eve as we are staying in Whitby for a week over Christmas.

Sorry I have just realised I should have put this question in the ' eating out ' category !
There are 39 reviews, from people who've stayed there, on this site:
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g18634 5-d209997-Reviews-White_Horse_and_Griffin-Whit by_North_Yorkshire_England.html
(Although that site reviews the White Horse & Griffin as a hotel, many of the reviewers give their views on the restaurant).

The Daily Telegraph reviewer liked it 16 months ago:

The problem with considering the quality of restaurants over the Christmas period is that many places let their standards slip during the festive season. I've been to places which serve superb food, at reasonable prices, throughout most of the year but at Christmas they've turned out the same basic meals as a Beefeater or Brewer's Fayre restaurant, at three or four times the price. (Hotels and restaurants often employ temporary agency staff over Christmas, even to fill senior positions. Many of them have no real interest in producing quality food or quality service.

God I'm a bit worried about my booking now !! I read the reviews on the first website and they generally are quite bad. When I read the Daily Telegraph one it was the opposite.Do you think the staff knew that the Daily Telegraph were coming to do a review ? It seems a bit odd that they experienced such good service etc compared to everyone else.I'm assuming my booking will be ok as we are paying a deposit and I shall aquire a receipt !! Thanks for your reply.

The food there is OK - not brilliant but not bad. The owner is a builder which may explain why the food he cooks can be hit or miss. Mr overall quite likes the place but the one thing that puts me off is that as soon as I walk through the door all I can smell is fish. The restaurant is in the basement so it's no good if you're claustrophobic.
For a really good meal try Greens on Bridge Street, The Magpie on Pier Road,Vintners or The Red Chard on Flowergate, The Moon & Sixpence on the harbourside or the Indian restaurant situated in the railway station.Just outside the town there is Netherby House in Sleights or The Estbeck in Sandsend, both of which are excellent, if a little formal. For pub grub try The Duke of York or Bar Seven - their yorkshire puddings on Sunday are to die for.
