Hi P - if you don't use suet it will be a jam sponge rolled up as the 'effect' of the roly poly is to be a firm pastry with an almost pie-crust consistency if made properly.

If you want to avoid the meat by-product just use vegetarian suet instead and use a basic roly poly recipe in exactly the same way. The result will be just as good. (Its made from a blend of rice flour and (usualy) palm oil to give the texture of shredded beef suet). You can get this from most good wholefood stores and also some of the supermarkets.

And don't forget the lashings of custard.......
whenever i make a home made steak pie, i use the leftover pastry for a roly poly.

sometimes jam, sometimes lemon curd.
