My friend says that the female of a buffalo is a bufala, whereas I say that a bufala is buffalo in Italian. This all came about because she said as a buffalo is male he can't produce the milk for mozzarella cheese. Help! Who is right?

Bufala is Italian for buffalo so you're right.
Buffalo or Oxen can be either a Bull or a cow, so your right again.
