How 'bout because the bottle top used to leave a metallic residue and by adding lime it would neutralise this . . . ?
I was told it was to clean the top of the bottle so one could drink out it safely.
It is supposed to enhance the taste - at least they tried!
I think it originally started to hide the taste of nasty Mexican beer eg Sol. Just an idea, but is it recently popular to make it more difficult for drinks to be spiked with "other substances" which is, I understand, an increasingly likely occurrence? By the way, I am more in agreement with sft42's answer.
Makes it taste good apparently. Anyhow what's wrong with Corona? it's better than Budweiser or Miller Lite at least.
Lime improves the taste of the beer when eaten with mexican food. Chilies, grilled meat and corn (tortillas, pupusas. .)
