Do military personnel records have to be kept for 100 years from date of birth? If so, when did this law come into effect?
Are the military allowed to destroy your personal files after 6 years? If so, when did this law come into effect?

Any help much appreciated.

It depends on the type of record I think. 100 years is correct for some types of data but may not be true for ephemera eg expenses claims.


When this came in I've no idea. If they've been destroyed in error I'm not sure of the consequences. I very much doubt if the entire file can be legitimately destroyed after 6 years.

I was in the Navy from 1973 - 1976 and recently I found out that I could obtain my personnel and medical records from the Ministry of Defence. I did this and was posted them within about a month although they were copies
