For 15 I would buy two very different, but both good, wines.

I would buy a good Rioja, preferably a Gran Reserva. If you look at the back of the bottle (sometimes on the neck) there will be a small 'stamp'. This stamp can be green, blue, brown or very dark red. The darker the red, the better quality the wine. I would avoid the Faustino labels, as this is very over-rated, in my opinion. A good place to start is Tesco.

For the fun of it, I would also buy a Sparkling Shiraz. This is a lovely, rich, full flavoured fizzy red that comes in a bottle similar to Champagne. Very drinkable, feels special and celebratory.

Other people of course will have their own ideas of the perfect wine gift.
Yes Spanish RIOJA is full bodied; but, for something with real muscle you could spend your 15 on an Italian BAROLO.
I agree with Ethel a sparkling Shiraz could be fun as an addition to a rioja.

Thanks peeps, will have a look in the shops tomorrow :-)
Zuccardi Q Tempranillo. It's from Argentina so is very deep, dark and treacly. Available from Tesco at 9.99.
Sounds interesting. I prefer Argentillian and Chilean wines to many of the Australians
