I'd say go continental - take some parma ham, fresh figs, chunky bread and nice cheeses. Wash down with Shloer or an alco free wine. Steer clear of the scotch eggs and Tizer...not good for a roamntic picnic!
how about some fresh fruit, already cut up into bits? Strawberries, raspberries, apple, grapes etc
Small, delicious things to feed each other with - juicy prawns, strawberries, very good chocolates (no, Dairy Box will NOT do!), tiny pastries, grapes, cherry tomatoes stuffed with soft, oozy cream cheese, pieces of brie wrapped in parma ham, bits of melon, ditto, pieces of marinaded artichoke, tiny, weeny kebabs (one or two little pieces of delicious meat on cocktail sticks), baby tartlets filled with crab, well made sushi (not that stodgy rubbish from Sainsbury or Waitrose - get it from somewhere good) Little rounds of griddled bread, topped with finely chopped tomato and fresh basil, need I go on?
Can't get my head round romantic and teetotal, though - champagne for me, please!
The most romantic thing would be to not have the picnic. They can have a tendency to promise more than they deliver and are generally a hugely overrated way of eating.

But if you must, then go down the road of nibbles that will survive being carted around, as mentioned above. Don't fall into the trap many people do of bringing sandwiches - one of the worst types of food to carry around. Have a good reliable way of keeping your soft drinks cold and your fruit and nibbles fresh. Carefully pick your area, try to have the possibility of shade, and make sure it's not near lots of insects or excrement. People understandably think being near water is nice until they get descended upon by all the river-loving flying things.

Cranberry juice is good, and can be kept sealed in its carton until you get there; at the moment for me the very best soft drinks are the Pure Pret cans you get from Pret a Manger. They're sparkling drinks and as far as possible they make them using only natural ingredients, for example my absolute favourite is the lemon which is just lemon juice, sparkling water and grape juice (which is generally used as the sweetener). If you're near a Pret branch get some cans of this (they also have orange, apple, cranberry, ginger) and get them freezing cold - they're gorgeous.

Good luck, let us know how it went.
