Is there an easy way of softening icecream when it comes out of the freezer, so it is easier to scoop out?

Just bring the container into the kitchen for about 5-10mins and it will be slightly softer to scoop out. Then return to freezer.
I dont think so but you could run or dip the scoop in hot water to make it easier,it works:--)
why not just buy soft scoop ice cream
Pour some boiling water into a mug, then soak the scoop in it for a few minutes before using it. You can return the scoop to the hot water between 'sweeps' to rewarm it.
Sorry, FINA - missed your post completely. S'OK, I'm having one of those days.
microwave it for a few seconds, i do it all the time. it comes out great.
in the restaurant we always keep the scoop in boiling water...we can be scooping 350 balls of icecream at a time!!! so the hot water thing definately works!!

I may be quite wrong but i think it's the high water to sugar ratio in some icecreams that makes them so rock hard. I make my own and I find the higher the fat and sugar content, the quicker it softens. Eggs, cream and sugar!

I've also invested in a solid scoop, as my spoons were bending. I found one that cost less than 1 from Sainsbury's basic range. No need to wait so long now...

I am the same as Lia*, a few seconds in the microwave not only softens it but it also tastes twice as nice (Only because it is softer and not because it has been in the microwave)
