It will be difficult to have plants in window boxes that will flower/grow year after year, particularly in shade. However you can take advantage of changing seasons by planting begonias, busy lizzies, fuchias and small hostas during spring/summer and then primulas, polyanthus and pansies for late winter/early spring. I have a hanging basket in shade that has small forms of heather and a few alpine plans in them, you could try this too. Good luck
