We have a gas single oven (by Stoves) and no matter what we try, baking or roasting never turns out right.

The most common problem is that the bottom of the food, a pie for example, is uncooked - often completely raw, while the top looks perfect.

Roast potatoes often take hours to cook, or they might appear cooked on the outside, but still raw inside.

We thought that this was temperature related, so experimented by varying the position of the items in the oven and varying the selected temperature up or down a gas mark.

The most edible results can be achieved with a very low temp, but at the expense of taking 3 to 4 times longer to cook than it should.

Why is this happening?

Is it new and under warranty? If it is then call the manufacturer.

If not it may just need a service - but dont necessarily call the manufacturers - they charge a fortune just to come out and tell you its not working!

Ask your neighbours if they can recommend a good local (corgi registered) plumber - one they either know or theyve used.
Personally Id seriously avoid the yellow pages these days.
The plumber I use has been around for donkeys years and is always busy. Id rather wait a couple of weeks for him to come and fix something as I know hell do a good job, will charge a reasonable rate and has that rarest of all qualities these days - he takes pride in his work.
Hope this helps and you may find more responses if you duplicate this post this on How it works and Home and garden and hope that someone like Stanleyman or Buildersmate picks it up, but point out its a duplicate.

Thanks John - don't know when it was last serviced... we inherited the oven when we moved in. I will start with that.
